Astra - The Dance Drama PDF Print E-mail
On Friday the 22nd I was able to attend the opening night of the Dance-Drama Astra. It is a show about passion -- its all consuming nature and the ballet captures it perfectly. Based on two Edgar Allan Poe works, Astra follows the tale of two scorned lovers, kept apart by feuding families. Astra loves to dance and strives to be the prefect ballerina. Dion is a master musician who seeks to find  a dancer capable of matching the sensual and impossible sounds of his music; a search that will span centuries.

The cast's performance and the direction of the crew is amazing. The cast and crew worked in synergy - telling the story through minimalistic sets that allowed the dancers talent and the emotion of the music to bring the story to life.  I especially liked the dancers' fire portrayal. They used sensual ferocity and passionate dance to demonstrate fire's consuming nature and how it's embrace of the flesh can be like a lover's commanding caress.  Dancer Kelli Divincen, from Fox's "So you think you can Dance" portrays Astra perfectly. Her grace of movement brings the prefect ballerina Astra to life. The music of the ballet is spectacular and at times can send chills down your spine. Composed by High Priestess, the music alone is worth going for.

Astra is playing for two more nights at the beautiful Million Dollar Theater in Los Angeles. Friday and Saturday tickets can be purchased from their website. Doors Open at 6pm and the show starts at 7pm.
